Since its inception, the Howard Volunteer Fire Department has been a cornerstone of safety and service in our community. Established by a group of dedicated volunteers, our department has grown from humble beginnings to become a vital part of Pleasant Valley. With a rich history of selfless service, we continue to honor our legacy by adapting to the evolving needs of our community, always prioritizing the safety and well-being of our neighbors.
Our Mission and Community Engagement
A Legacy of Service
The HVFD began humbly, with a pickup truck serving as its first fire vehicle. Over the years, the department expanded its fleet, acquiring a 1949 4×4 fire truck, affectionately known as the “Red Truck”, which remains a cherished part of its history.
Today, the department operates from a 7,500-square-foot facility along Highway 50, housing seven response vehicles and acting as a home base for one of Arkansas Valley Ambulance District’s (AVAD) ambulances. This modern station, funded entirely by community donations, serves as both a firehouse and a community center.
Mission and Community Involvement
The HVFD’s mission extends beyond firefighting. The department:
✅ Trains and equips local residents as volunteer firefighters.
✅ Educates the public on fire safety and prevention.
✅ Provides mutual aid to neighboring fire districts and federal agencies like the BLM and USFS.
✅ Partners with the local ambulance service (AVAD), ensuring rapid emergency response.
Volunteer-Driven and Community-Funded
Unlike larger municipal fire departments, HVFD relies entirely on volunteers and community donations to operate. The department is always looking for new volunteers to join their ranks and help protect the town.
